An Evening of Indian Classical Music and Community Art

dnj Gallery and LA House concerts host:

Sameer Gupta & Kamaljeet Ahluwalia
Friday, July 26, 7p.m.

In Santa Monica for just one evening, the New York City-based percussionist Sameer Gupta will be performing a unique musical experience with LA-based santoor player Kamaljeet Ahluwalia. Their performance will feature intricate rhythms and improvisational melodies based in the deep tradition of Indian classical raga music. Gupta has regularly performed at Lincoln Center NYC, SFJazz, Nehru Centre London and NYC MoMA, while Ahluwalia has written and produced numerous film and television scores globally.

This performance will be set against the beautiful background of the exhibition "Collaboration" which features photography of the Los Angeles Center of Photography (LACP) and The Boys & Girls Clubs of America

A big part of LACP's mission is to provide “focused programming for youth and low-income families, and community outreach.” As a staple in the photographic community, the organization recognizes the importance of giving back by providing education in the photographic arts for underserved youth and other non-profits.

"Patrick Nagatani -- Living in the story"

"Living in the Story" film screening --
Thursday, July 25th at 7:30pm

Photographer/art-maker -- Patrick Nagatani:

Words following the screening by his bother,  Scott Nagatani

Living in the Story documents thirty-five years of art-making by photographer Patrick Nagatani. The film portrays an artist deeply concerned with world events, who uses imagery and storytelling to raise awareness about modern anxieties, with an emphasis on the threat of nuclear weapons. Despite the serious content of his subject matter, his innovative images are compelling and entertaining. An engaging raconteur and teacher, Nagatani talks in the film about his projects, his unorthodox photographic techniques, and his subtle weaving together of fiction and fact.
A short version exploring three photographic series dealing with immigration/internment and nuclear issues is available. These issues are particularly relevant today, in light of escalating threats of war, toxic pollution and a growing refugee population worldwide.
Scott Nagatani’s hauntingly beautiful music score provides the film’s soundtrack.

"Collaboration" Opening Reception

Los Angeles Center of Photography and The Boys and Girls Club of America

Through August 3rd, 2019

A big part of LACP’s mission is to provide “focused programming for youth and low-income families, and community outreach.” We take this very seriously. As a staple in the photographic community, our organization recognizes the importance of giving back by providing education in the photographic arts for underserved youth and other non-profits. This is accomplished through strategic programming at local schools, one-one-one mentoring, supporting local raffles or benefits, and providing our facility to those organizations in need.
