Suda House and Santa Monica College

A dnj Gallery educational event, on Wednesday, October 3, 2018:

A class of photography students from Santa Monica College came to the gallery for an educational visit with dnj artist Suda House. Suda spoke with the students about her recent work, which they saw on display in "Whats New", and her solo show, "Women Bleed". She addressed the themes of her work including the difficulties women face in today's political climate, poignant current events, and depictions of suffering on the front pages of newspapers. Suda also explained the process behind her work, giving students a demonstration of how she transfers her photographs onto the sanitary napkins used in this series, and allowing them to try it for themselves.

Suda House- Aperture Magazine

Suda is featured in the September issue of Aperture Magazine #232:

"Reviewing the catalog, one is struck by the variety of forms and subject matter, as well as the humor, the lively energy, and the insouciance of much of the work.  The exhibition contained everything from a Kienholz sculpture made from a salvaged car door, where a silk-screened print from a photograph, rather than glass, fills the window frame; a bundle of snapeshots tied together with a string like a stack of newspapers (George Blakely's A Cubic Foot of Photographs, 1978); abstracted image fragments of female body parts sourced from porn and printed on maxi pas (Suda House's Stay Free Series, 1976);"

SHE is the new Buddha2018
Print is archival inks on canvas, unframed
40 x 50 inches

“SHE is the new Buddha"

This mixed media artwork is photography based. I took the photos in Maui (while celebrating my parents’ 50th anniversary) and digitally collaged them. It is printed using ultrachrome archival inks on canvas stock. This creates a final image that textured and flexible. Then the photo collage print is hand-painted with acrylics for a unique art piece. Ramon builds the frame and stretches the canvas.

Buddha’s eyes are #rainbows with ultra violet light flooding through.

The Holy Ghost is symbolically at her third eye.

She gently holds the powerful swordfish on it back as a reminder of infinite wisdom and balance that are always in play.

Lovely pink flowers hanging from Hawaiian trees grace the heroine! BTW Heroine became a negative over a drug that blames women for the problem!

Swordfish pattern is an original photograph that I created a mandala-style pattern to symbolize flow and force of unseen energy in the air.
