Artist Reception: November 8, 2014 from 6-8pm

dnj is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition of “Surfers” by Gil Kofman.  In gallery II, we present work by Catherine Asanov, entitled “Cyrillia.”

Gil Kofman returns to dnj Gallery for his second solo show, introducing his new project entitled “Surfers.”  Kofman creates a scene for a performance.  He places the figures on an empty stage, with a simple setting, and  “turn(s) their leisure into something more existential and universal.”  He establishes this happening with the intention of eliciting the viewer’s own responses, and thus producing one’s individual play.  Kofman bleaches the highlights and darkens the figures and other shapes to create a unique, provoking image.

Kofman was born in Nigeria and raised in Kenya, Israel and New York.  He attended the NYU Graduate Film School after studying physics at Cornell.  He also holds an MFA in playwriting from the Yale School of Drama.  Kofman has written, produced, directed and edited a variety of fiction, plays, documentaries and other films.  He has exhibited his photographic work in New York and has previously sold his photographs through a gallery in Rome.  His prints are in private collections in New York and Los Angeles and have appeared in the New York Times and other publications.

Catherine Asanov grew up hearing stories from her mother which examined her Russian background, and led to their discussions of Russian culture.  The project “Cyrillia,” at first glance, should be placed within the genre of ‘fashion photography’, but Asanov’s images will not be.  These photographs are devoted to the narrative of sharing tales, and have a deeper meaning.  She feels a need to express herself and her personal history, and ultimately generates a personal response.   She believes “… these stories become the basic building blocks of our cultural identity and our understanding of who we are.”

This is Asanov’s first solo show at dnj Gallery.  She graduated with her B.F.A. from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Her photographs have been shown extensively throughout the United States, with a few exhibitions abroad.  Asanov has also had many images published in major magazines.  Catherine is known for her creativity, the high quality of her photographs, and her vision for design. Catherine is also an established fashion, commercial, advertising and celebrity photographer.  She is based in Los Angeles and New York City.

For the months of October and November dnj Gallery is offering a 15% discount on photographs by dnj artist Robert von Sternberg.

Robert von Sternberg has been active in Southern California photography for several decades.  His photographs cover a range of subjects, all showcasing von Sternberg's talent for finding and capturing the exquisite, yet easily overlooked moments of everyday life. Using humor and wit, von Sternberg's images ultimately lead his audience to the discovery that in a world saturated with images there is still a reason to look. von Sternberg states, "Images exist--waiting to be captured. Subliminally, I'm always looking for them. I encounter them everywhere--on my commute, while attending events and even while traveling."

von Sternberg started taking photographs in his early years in Hermosa Beach and sold the very first image he took to Surfer Magazine. He has exhibited his work since the late sixties and has pieces in numerous private collections and 45 museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House in Rochester, New York.

The Good Life > Palm Springs

Recently featured on the BBC.

Thought of as 'Paradise,' Palm Springs is a vacation spot for much of southern California. It is located about 100 miles from Los Angeles. Palm Springs has this resort reputation, which has spread nation-wide, because of its attractions amidst the desert sun. Nancy Baron, on the contrary, highlights the community aspects of locals there, sharing the small town quality that exists. Baron does not glamorize Palm Springs; she is a part-time resident, and is able to rejoice in the everyday life of this place. As she states, "I aim to capture and celebrate the majesty in worlds that could easily be overlooked, seen as mundane, or otherwise misunderstood." Her photographs, illuminating the use of saturated colors and a specific style of decoration, emphasizes her observations and the possibility of a path to 'The Good Life.'

This is Nancy Baron’s first solo show with dnj Gallery. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally, with an emphasis here, in southern California.  She lives and works in Los Angeles and Palm Springs.  The Good Life > Palm Springs is now a monograph published by Kehrer Verlag.  It is currently available in Europe and will be available in the U.S. and Canada this fall, 2014.
