dnj Gallery Artist Ray Carofano

Close at Hand, Recent Photographs by Ray Carofano at Los Angeles Harbor College

Los Angeles Harbor College Fine Arts Gallery will be exhibiting Ray Carofano's recent work, which documents images from the artist's San Pedro neighborhood.

“I am a hunter not a farmer. I do not cultivate images, I find them. The camera is a tool that educates me on what’s going on around me. I reside in the Los Angeles port town of San Pedro, 5 blocks from the main channel where container ships, cruise ships and tugboats come and go, day & night, among the hammerhead cranes. The commercial / industrial environment of San Pedro, Wilmington & Long Beach offers a wealth of visual material. It may be gritty but if you look hard enough you discover geometric beauty in the concrete and steel, while surrounding parks and beaches offer a tranquil contrast.”

dnj Gallery Artist Ellen Cantor

Review of Exhibit at West Hollywood Library

Beverly Press Newspaper recently featured dnj Gallery artist Ellen Cantor, whose "Prior Pleasures" series was exhibited at the West Hollywood Library.

"Prior Pleasures is deeply influenced by my love of literature. This series explores memory and preservation of the past while ensuring the creation of a visual legacy for the next generation. The books photographed for this series are the ones I have carried with me since childhood. My mother read them to me and, in turn, I read them to my children, carrying on a tradition of the written and spoken word."

dnj Gallery artist -- Darryl Curran's Artist Reception

"Sun: Shadows" Darryl Curran

Now through Saturday, March 2

"SUN: SHADOW"
Darryl Curran

Curran exhibits two bodies of photographic work:  solar photograms – SUN, and color prints – SHADOW.

For SUN, the solar photograms document small objects, leaves, tools, lace, etc., and are contact printed onto paper coated with gum pigment solution. A skylight in the gallery offers a real-time demonstration of the role of the sun in the process of exposing a photogram during the exhibition.

SHADOW features photographs that focus on fleeting traces of shadows cast upon a projection screen. The screen metaphor fuses the act of photographing black and white film through RGB filters, deconstructing the scene. Digital applications reconstruct the scene to reveal nuanced colorful shadows.

Sia Aryai's Artist Reception

dnj Gallery artist reception -- "Griffith Park"

Saturday, February 9

Sia Aryai defines beauty in his pieces. He explores not only the outward appearance of an object, but also the spirit and passion. The images in “Griffith Park” describe not only the color and shape, but with the appearance of the personality and gesture too.

PAC members visit the Andrew Schwartz Collection

"European Photography Between the Wars"

Saturday, February 9

led by Andrew Schwartz

Most of this body of work provides a look at the "New Objectivity" movement.  These photographers have a more documentary approach, a more precise way of seeing, which is in response to the previous method which used a Pictoralism style.
