The Museum Project 2012-2015 Featured in Silvershotz

The Museum Project 2012-2015, recently featured in the October edition of Silvershotz Magazine.

In 2012, American photographer and curator, Robert von Sternberg, felt compelled to express his appreciation to the museums and universities that had long supported him in his career as an artist and university art professor. His idea was to donate works of art to institutions that would welcome these additions to their permanent collections. A group of like-minded artists, also willing to make donations, was mobilized, and The Museum Project was born.

UPCOMING EXHIBITION

Patrick Nagatani: Themes and Variations

Koshare/Tewa Ritual Clowns, Missile Park, White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, (Nuclear Enchantment)

Patrick Ryoichi Nagatani is bursting with ideas and stories to tell. For more than 30 years, he has been sharing his narratives through the pictures he makes. What’s going on here, you ask? Splashes of color irradiate parts of people, pets and wild creatures, kachinas soar with missiles, and archaeological digs expose 20th century automobiles in incongruous places and eras. Nagatani’s images take you on fascinating journeys that explore history, personal philosophy, culture, spirituality, fantasy and reality. Images from seven major bodies of work that Nagatani has completed are presented here as well as a literary and photographic novel, “The Race,” that he is currently creating with other artists.

Themes and Variations was partially drawn from Desire for Magic – Patrick Nagatani 1978-2008, the exhibition and monograph, curated by Michele M. Penhall, Curator of Prints and Photographs at the University of New Mexico Art Museum, Albuquerque. That exhibition traveled to the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles and was exhibited at the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences of West Virginia.

The Griffin Museum of Photography is pleased to offer a distinctive and expanded version of the initial exhibition.  Barbara P. Hitchcock, Independent Curator and former Curator of the Polaroid Collection, organized and curated Patrick Nagatani: Themes and Variations.

Thought of as 'Paradise,' Palm Springs is a vacation spot for much of southern California. It is located about 100 miles from Los Angeles. Palm Springs has this resort reputation, which has spread nation-wide, because of its attractions amidst the desert sun. Nancy Baron, on the contrary, highlights the community aspects of locals there, sharing the small town quality that exists. Baron does not glamorize Palm Springs; she is a part-time resident, and is able to rejoice in the everyday life of this place. As she states, "I aim to capture and celebrate the majesty in worlds that could easily be overlooked, seen as mundane, or otherwise misunderstood." Her photographs, illuminating the use of saturated colors and a specific style of decoration, emphasizes her observations and the possibility of a path to 'The Good Life.'

Upcoming Exhibition: Suda House

dnj Gallery artist Suda House will be featured in an upcoming exhibition inspired by the design aesthetic and creative philosophy of architect Irving Gill.

Opening Reception

Friday, September 26
5:00pm - 7:00pm
at Wisteria Cottage
La Jolla Historical Society

The exhibition will be open Thursday - Sunday, 12:00pm - 4:00pm
September 27, 2014 - January 25, 2015

"Master Architect Irving Gill (1870-1936) is considered a pioneer of the early modern movement in architecture, and there are numerous examples of his work still remaining in San Diego.  A number of these important buildings are in La Jolla, including the La Jolla Woman’s Club, La Jolla Recreation Center, and at The Bishop’s School and Scripps Institution of Oceanography.  The photographers for this project, Philipp Scholz Rittermann, Suda House, and John Durant, were commissioned by the Society to take Gill’s philosophical idea and produce a body of new works each of which includes all or part of a Gill building.  They were asked to be creative in their interpretation, to diverge from standard building portraits, and to translate a historical idea into a modern perspective.  The resulting exhibition presents an adventure into the legacy of Gill and this unique aspect of his philosophy, and the three artist’s present interpretations that are uniquely suited to the media of contemporary photography."

In addition, the Japanese American National Museum has a special show focusing on the life of Japanese Americans during World War II. dnj Gallery: Featured Artist Laura Parker - now extended through March

Featured Artist: Laura Parker

For the month of February and now extended through March, dnj Gallery is offering a 15% discount on photographs by dnj artist Laura Parker.

Laura Parker, Rotations (Landscape in Green & Red),
2009, chromagenic monotype prints, installation of 7 panels, unique, 51.5" x 72"

Laura Parker, Naked Eye Objects (Red),
2007, digital c-print, 20" x 20"

Laura Parker examines time, structure and similar themes in relation to insight and observation. She explains that, "Photography, whether moving or still, inevitably leads to issues of perception. While we use a variety of devices to frame or study an object, the act of looking -eye movements- can be broken down into the intentional and the random.” She asks her viewer to question the concept of truth and its relationship to perceived reality.  And, in the end, Parker’s work is as much about its installation.  “From the planetary to the simple hollow of a bowl, I find myself attracted to the circle.”  In much of her work, a circle reveals no end and brings the viewer back to the beginning, and creates juxtapositions within the work.

Laura Parker is collected privately throughout California and the United States. She earned her BFA, Magna cum Laude from UCLA and her MFA from CalArts, Valencia, CA. Most recently, her work was on view at the Rayko Photo Center, San Francisco, the Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena and Kontor Projects, Copenhagen, Denmark. She currently lives and works in Pasadena.

Cynthia Greig featured on Huffington Post

It's been a good week for dnj artist, Cynthia Greig! After just having her work reviewed in Beautiful Decay, Greig's photographs have also been reviewed on Huffintgon Post.

"[Cynthia Greig] creates what appear to be simple, black-and-white drawings of ordinary, if not a bit outdated, household objects. A non-portable telephone, a clunky camera, a rotating fan -- Greig finds her inspiration in objects that hover dangerously close to obsolescence. But what look like two-dimensional sketches are actually three-dimensional sculptures." - Huffington Post

Alain Laboile & Dale Johnson

dnj Gallery presents two exhibitions with strong ties to France.  “La Famille” by Alain Laboile, a French photographer, will be in the main gallery.  Dale Johnson’s “Paris Portfolio” will be in Gallery II.  Both exhibitions will be on display through January 4, 2014.

Childhood is the central theme in Alain Laboile's series.  Using his own children as models, he seeks to evoke the universal yet fleeting qualities of childhood, including freedom, curiosity, and a lack of inhibition.  Similar to the American photographer, Sally Mann, Laboile records a combination of spontaneous moments of childhood repose, revealing striking pictures of imaginative play.  He explains: “Though my work is deeply personal, it’s also accessible, addressing human nature and allowing the viewer[s] to enter my world and reflect on their own childhoods.”

Laboile is the father of six and lives with his children and his wife, Anne, in Arbis, France.  Laboile was a sculptor for many years before turning to photography in 2004, first as a means of preparing for and documenting his sculptural work and then as an artistic pursuit.  His photographs have been exhibited in France, Cambodia and Japan.  “La Famille” is his first exhibition in the United States.  He is scheduled to publish a collection of his images with Steidl Verlag next year.

In her “Paris Portfolio,” Dale Johnson was inspired by her own family roots in the city and her family members’ connection to the arts there in the nineteenth century.  She “wanted to ‘draw’ the ‘Old Paris’ – the City in its various facets; narrow lanes, old buildings, busy cafes and shops with their window displays.”  She employs the method she has developed of shooting with a plastic camera lens on a sophisticated digital camera to give her images a soft and grainy effect, which she further enhances with an additional layer of texture.

Johnson was raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Sao Paulo, Brazil and currently splits her time between Carmel, CA and Santa Fe, NM.  Johnson earned her B.F.A. in graphic design from the Art Center in Pasadena.  In 2008, she began experimenting with photographic lenses that would allow her to combine the aesthetics of her painting style with the immediacy of a photograph.  She has exhibited her photography across the country.  In 2010, Johnson’s photographs were published in “Color Magazine,” Special Issue #10, and “Urban Country Landscape,” The Worldwide Gala Awards.  As a winner in the Emerging Focus Photography Competition, her work was exhibited at photo l.a., 2012.  This is her second solo exhibition at dnj Gallery.

Jock Sturges on Alain Laboile

"The secret would appear to be fourfold.

1) He has an amazing level of physical and mental energy. Simply put, he's very strong.

2) He has a huge advantage in never having studied photography at all and thus labors with no limits to his creativity. It's a bit ironic for me to set this down as a strength because when I am teaching I am forever abjuring young photographers to invest themselves as deeply as ever they can in the history of both photography and all the other arts as well. But in Alain's case his inherent aesthetic genius (the word is well applied) is usefully liberated by the absence of preconception and exterior influence.

3) Alain has worked as a successful sculptor working in iron for much of his life. He executes works, often large and very elaborate, on commission all over France. Thence come his physical strength and aesthetic muscle to which I can add my perception of his exceptional creative discipline.

4) Alain's family -- the subject of the vast majority of his photography. Simply put, Alain and his wife, Anne, are wonderful parents who allow their children to be remarkably free in a beautiful landscape. I have visited them several times and was so very impressed by how much the children loved both their parents and each other(!) as well, and by how profoundly uninhibited and creative they were in how they interacted with and played in their home environment. In fact, I was so very impressed by the beauty of this family that I find myself impatient with the artifice of written language to adequately express the wonder of people and place. Only Alain's pictures do that at all well. They tell the truth."

dnj artist, Andrew Uchin was recently featured on Lenscratch for his The Reader Series.

"Andrew Uchin's project, The Reader Series, does just that as he explores the book-as-object and an individual's engagement with said object through added text and the wear and tear of a cherished possession. Like an archeologist, Andrew has uncovered how we interact with the printed page."
