This exhibition explores the emotions of children as they progress through their education. At the start of a child's formal education there is excitement, enthusiasm and a love of learning. The young student is eager to learn and is pleased to be in this new setting. But, as children age, things change. Kids become sleep deprived and lack adequate nutrition, trying to keep a balance. Many become extremely focused on academic scores and grades.

dnj Gallery hosted artist talks with artists, Nancy Webber and Shelia Pinkle, from The Museum Project 2012-2015 exhibition.  These women discussed the show students from the Art Institute of Los Angeles.  This educational opportunity allowed the students to further explore and understand the concept of the exhibit.

In 2012, American photographer and curator, Robert von Sternberg, felt compelled to express his appreciation to the museums and universities that had long supported him in his career as an artist and university art professor. His idea was to donate works of art to institutions that would welcome these additions to their permanent collections. A group of like-minded artists, also willing to make donations, was mobilized, and The Museum Project was born.

Upcoming Exhibition: First Annual LACP Student Street Shooting in Los Angeles

The dnj Gallery and the Los Angeles Center of Photography are proud to announce "Street Shooting in Los Angeles." This exhibit is comprised of 28 photographs taken by 28 photographers under the guidance of street shooting instructor Julia Dean over a six-month period. Street photography is a type of documentary photography that captures candid moments on the street. This genre of photography follows the ethics of photojournalism and documentary photography by not setting up or manipulating the image.  As Julia Dean explains, "Street photography can be a bit scary and exhilarating at the same time. But one thing is for certain, it will make you a better photographer."

A Sense of Community: Exploring Place Through Documentary Photography

A Collaborative Book and Gallery Exhibit Between Suburban Prep and Urban Public High Schools

Photography students have joined forces to tell an important story about the tale of their two diametrically divergent communities. Students from the private prep school, Harvard-Westlake, are collaborating with students from the Humanitas Academy of Art and Technology (HAAT), a public high school in East LA, to make a 21st century, vibrant documentary portrait of where “we” live - covering a wide range of territory from wealthy suburbs to urban blue-collar and under-privileged neighborhoods.

The project will culminate in a gallery exhibit and the publication of a hardcover book. This collaboration is being directed by Joe Medina, photography teacher at Harvard Westlake and Joan Dooley, photography teacher at the Humanitas Academy of Art and Technology (HAAT).

The exhibit will open at the DNJ Gallery at Bergamot Station (Santa Monica) on Saturday, May 16, 2015 and remain on view for a month.

The project is inspired by a belief in the power of photography as an educational tool, and a desire to help people communicate the way they see their lives and their communities. The project also aims at encouraging students to respond to artistic challenges that will push their creative and technical boundaries.

The Fullerton College Photography Department offers both an Associate Arts Degree in Photography and a Certificate in Professional Photography. The Photography Program’s curriculum entails both theory and practicum teaching that is designed to provide students with a comprehensive photographic foundation.

What:               1-Day Street Closure for Roadway Improvements  

When:             Saturday, April 11, 2015

Work Hours:    8:00 a.m. to 9: 00 p.m.  

Where:             26th Street, south of Olympic Boulevard

Traffic Impacts:

·        Northbound 26th Street will be closed to through traffic between Cloverfield Boulevard and Olympic Boulevard.

·        Pedestrian access to Bergamot Arts Center will be maintained via the 26th Street entrance will be maintained.

·        Vehicular access to Bergamot Arts Center will be maintained via the Michigan Street entrance.

·        Eastbound and westbound Olympic Boulevard will remain open at all times.

·        The crosswalk on the south side of Olympic Boulevard at 26th Street will be temporarily closed during the closure period.

·        Local and pedestrian access on 26th Street, south of Olympic Boulevard will be maintained and managed by flaggers.

Advisories:

·        Electronic message boards, directional signage and flaggers will be used to direct vehicles and pedestrians around the construction zone.

·        No parking will be allowed at any time during this closure. Signage with specific restrictions will be strictly enforced and will be in place in all construction areas.

·        Noise levels will be monitored to ensure compliance and the work area will be watered down to minimize dust.

·        Please obey all posted construction signs and do not enter the construction work zone.

After practicing veterinary medicine for decades, Allan Gill turned his medical X-ray equipment on flowers and plants. His glowing images depict both the internal and external structures of his subjects. As he explains, "images are captured in much the same way as with conventional photography, with the difference being instead of utilizing reflected light, I am able to utilize another part of the electromagnetic spectrum...." Gill's technique may seem simple but in fact is the result of years of experimenting with different kinds of X-ray equipment to find the right combination of conditions that would allow him to record the level of detail he desired.

Gill lives and works in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. In addition to establishing a growing audience for his photography, Gill is also a veterinarian. His photographs have been exhibited in Canada and sold in the United States and have been featured in LensWork Magazine, Focus Magazine, American Art Collector, Color Magazine, 'digitalis photo' (Hungary), and Black and White Photography (Britain).

dnj is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition of "Her | Self: Women In Their Own Words." Photographs by Jennifer Bermon, writing by women.

Jennifer Bermon presents photographs of women, and the writings of these women describing, in their own words, how they feel about the way they look in the pictures. In the United States, we grow up feeling as if our bodies are manifestations of our inner selves, and perhaps because of the power of such beliefs we offer these sometime negative comments about ourselves. For example, when Bermon was a student at Mills College, she listened to the comments some of her friends made about themselves, "these were intelligent, strong, beautiful women ... yet they still felt the need to be thin and attractive in order to be accepted." Bermon has taken photographs of a diverse group of women who have a wide range of things to say, many of which are positive and hopeful. Bermon does not make her own assumptions; she instead wishes to listen to the women as they describe themselves, in their own voice. The exhibit includes a history-making NYC firefighter, a woman who has sailed around the world twice, a NASA scientist, an actress, a judge, a farmer, a 74-year-old Rabbi, a Southern reverend, an Academy Award-winning screenplay writer and an Emmy Award-winning producer.

Bermon attended Mills College, and studied photography with Catherine Wagner as part of her self-designed major of photography, art and writing. She has been working as a professional photographer since age 18, when her first portrait was published. She was a photo researcher/editor for The San Francisco Bay Shoreline Guide, a unique guide to the shoreline's cultural, historical, wildlife and plant life, published by the Coastal Conservancy and UC Press. She has spent the majority of her career working as a producer in network television, specializing in documentaries, national network news and newsmagazine programs. Her work has appeared on NBC, ABC, ITV, MSNBC, CNBC, Discovery Channel, Investigation Discovery, TLC, Weather Channel, E! Entertainment-TV, BayTV/KRON-TV, WNYC-TV, NPR, and KPFA/Pacifica Radio.

In conjunction with the current FotoFilmic'14 exhibition, dnj Gallery and FotoFilmic will be hosting the Impossible Project, a hands-on photographic demonstration and workshop. Participants will learn the basic use of an 8 x 10 camera and will be able to make their own take-home portrait.

FotoFilmic was founded in 2012 as a global film-photography publication and curation platform dedicated to emerging and unknown photo talents attached to film worldwide.  In the global context of digital technology FotoFilmic reflects an ongoing transformative understanding of Film Photography as a distinct fine art medium and practice within contemporary photography. While most film shooters are presently found in academic art departments pursing advanced degrees, FotoFilmic’s core intention is to open wide the publication doors of contemporary film photography to all talented amateurs without restriction of ages or location that demonstrate high quality of execution and creative envisioning.

dnj Gallery will be hosting FotoFilmic’14, the second annual and global film photography competition.  In January, 2015, this traveling exhibition will come from Vancouver, Canada to Los Angeles, California.  We will be having a talk/presentation, at the beginning of the opening reception, at 6pm.  They will introduce the FotoFilmic organization and competition and relate it to the exhibition in its representation of contemporary film photography, and then answer questions in an informal open dialogue with the audience.
