Alain Laboile & Dale Johnson

dnj Gallery presents two exhibitions with strong ties to France.  “La Famille” by Alain Laboile, a French photographer, will be in the main gallery.  Dale Johnson’s “Paris Portfolio” will be in Gallery II.  Both exhibitions will be on display through January 4, 2014.

Childhood is the central theme in Alain Laboile's series.  Using his own children as models, he seeks to evoke the universal yet fleeting qualities of childhood, including freedom, curiosity, and a lack of inhibition.  Similar to the American photographer, Sally Mann, Laboile records a combination of spontaneous moments of childhood repose, revealing striking pictures of imaginative play.  He explains: “Though my work is deeply personal, it’s also accessible, addressing human nature and allowing the viewer[s] to enter my world and reflect on their own childhoods.”

Laboile is the father of six and lives with his children and his wife, Anne, in Arbis, France.  Laboile was a sculptor for many years before turning to photography in 2004, first as a means of preparing for and documenting his sculptural work and then as an artistic pursuit.  His photographs have been exhibited in France, Cambodia and Japan.  “La Famille” is his first exhibition in the United States.  He is scheduled to publish a collection of his images with Steidl Verlag next year.

In her “Paris Portfolio,” Dale Johnson was inspired by her own family roots in the city and her family members’ connection to the arts there in the nineteenth century.  She “wanted to ‘draw’ the ‘Old Paris’ – the City in its various facets; narrow lanes, old buildings, busy cafes and shops with their window displays.”  She employs the method she has developed of shooting with a plastic camera lens on a sophisticated digital camera to give her images a soft and grainy effect, which she further enhances with an additional layer of texture.

Johnson was raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Sao Paulo, Brazil and currently splits her time between Carmel, CA and Santa Fe, NM.  Johnson earned her B.F.A. in graphic design from the Art Center in Pasadena.  In 2008, she began experimenting with photographic lenses that would allow her to combine the aesthetics of her painting style with the immediacy of a photograph.  She has exhibited her photography across the country.  In 2010, Johnson’s photographs were published in “Color Magazine,” Special Issue #10, and “Urban Country Landscape,” The Worldwide Gala Awards.  As a winner in the Emerging Focus Photography Competition, her work was exhibited at photo l.a., 2012.  This is her second solo exhibition at dnj Gallery.

Photos from our opening artist reception for Alain Laboile and Dale Johnson

Photos from our reception, which was held last weekend for our two new exhibitions: La Famille and Paris Portfolio. Both exhibitions hold strong ties to France. In the Main Gallery, French photographer Alain Laboile's exhibition features charming and compositionally engaging family photos taken at his home in the Bordeaux region of France. In Gallery II, Dale Johnson's contemporary photographs of Paris are created to relay an old feeling to the city while capturing the natural light.

Both exhibitions will be on view until January 4, 2014. Make sure to stop by dnj to see these exhibitions before the closing date! We hope to see you at the gallery soon.

Dreamy views of the shore capture the imagination in Johnson’s “By the Sea” series.
Johnson is an accomplished artist who worked with charcoal, gouache, watercolor, and
pastel for several decades but eventually turned to photography to satisfy her desire for
a sense of spontaneity. Inspired by both Pictorialism in photography and Pointillism in
painting, Johnson seeks to create with the quick click of the shutter the soft, hazy effects
she cherished in her work in other mediums. Johnson states, “[m]y art education led
me to appreciate the quality of light, form and texture and how they set the tone or
mood for my photographs in composition, palette and texture.”

Johnson earned her B.F.A. from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. She has
exhibited across the country, and as a winner in the Emerging Focus Photography
Competition, her work was exhibited at Photo L.A. 2012. In 2010, Johnson’s
photographs were published in “Color Magazine,” Special Issue #10, and “Urban
Country Landscape,” The Worldwide Gala Awards. Johnson lives and works in Carmel,
California and Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The trees of Manhattan’s Central Park arrive in Santa Monica in Shepherd’s “Blinded by
Science” series. With these works, Shepherd seeks the antidote to his view of the
world as an environmental scientist and student of botany–someone so “blinded by
science” that trees are more subjects of study than objects of beauty. By treating the
leaves and branches of trees as parts of an abstraction, Shepherd rediscovers the
aesthetic wonders of nature. He states, “I am using the artistic power of abstraction to
create images of some of my favorite plants and trees, which helps me filter out the
science details and lets me focus on the pure beauty of nature.”

Dan Shepherd has a master’s degree in environmental science from Columbia University
and an International Diploma in Plant Conservation from the Royal Botanic Garden,
Kew, England. He holds a B.A. in Japanese from the University of Oregon. His work
has been shown in various locations throughout the country, and has been featured in
several recent publications, including: “The Orion Magazine,” “The F-Stop Magazine –
Abstraction” and “Lenscratch.” This is his first show at dnj Gallery.
