UPCOMING EXHIBITION

Patrick Nagatani: Themes and Variations

Koshare/Tewa Ritual Clowns, Missile Park, White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, (Nuclear Enchantment)

Patrick Ryoichi Nagatani is bursting with ideas and stories to tell. For more than 30 years, he has been sharing his narratives through the pictures he makes. What’s going on here, you ask? Splashes of color irradiate parts of people, pets and wild creatures, kachinas soar with missiles, and archaeological digs expose 20th century automobiles in incongruous places and eras. Nagatani’s images take you on fascinating journeys that explore history, personal philosophy, culture, spirituality, fantasy and reality. Images from seven major bodies of work that Nagatani has completed are presented here as well as a literary and photographic novel, “The Race,” that he is currently creating with other artists.

Themes and Variations was partially drawn from Desire for Magic – Patrick Nagatani 1978-2008, the exhibition and monograph, curated by Michele M. Penhall, Curator of Prints and Photographs at the University of New Mexico Art Museum, Albuquerque. That exhibition traveled to the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles and was exhibited at the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences of West Virginia.

The Griffin Museum of Photography is pleased to offer a distinctive and expanded version of the initial exhibition.  Barbara P. Hitchcock, Independent Curator and former Curator of the Polaroid Collection, organized and curated Patrick Nagatani: Themes and Variations.

An article from Albuquerque’s Intelligent Alternative by Katherine Oostman discusses this upcoming exhibition further:

"The single constant in life is that it changes. None know this better than the artists of the exhibit Adaptations. This collection showcases pieces inspired by the process of living with, and around, a detrimental disease such as cancer.

The project, put on by SCA Contemporary, combines the work of local and national artists presenting pieces of sculpture, painting, collage, mixed-media, photograph and installation art. It includes the work of Lea Anderson, Heidi Pollard, Patrick Nagatani, Leigh Anne Langwell, Tara Massarsky, Dana Burgy-Gautschi, Valerie Roybal, Amy Clinkscales, Linda Mae Tratechaud, Randi Ganulin, Andre Ruesch, Barbara Crawford and Carol Chase Bjerke. Together, these artists have created a space filled with expressions of grief, anger and bewilderment, but also compassion, understanding and camaraderie.

The original idea to create a space for art fueled by major illness came from Clinkscales, Roybal and Nagatani, artists and curators of the show. At first, they fondly referred to the project as “the disease show.” However, as Roybal faced her second diagnosis of stage-four cancer, she meditated on the process of continuing to live with a disease that would not go away."

Patrick Nagatani: Medium, Meditation, and Mu

Carol Chase Bjerke and Patrick Nagatani  are collaborating on their most recent show at the Common Wealth Gallery Medium, Meditation and Mu.

The exhibition with be open October 12th through the 28th, 2012.  There will be an opening reception Friday October 12, from 5 to 8 pm.

The exhibition will be featuring Carol Chase Bjerke's ENSO in conjunction with Patrick Nagatani's "Tape-estries".

"The Carol Chase Bjerke/Patrick Nagatani collaboration started more than six years ago. It is based on mutual creative support, and has been nurtured by common interests and experiences - including healing from similar cancers, a passion for process in their work and ideas, and finding resources in Eastern philosophical and aesthetic traditions.

Nagatani’s large “tape-estries” are meticulously-layered depictions of Buddhist deities. The complexity of symbolic reference in the imagery is complimented by the simplicity of the materials used in construction, i.e. ordinary masking tape “painted” over photographic prints. This is the first major showing of this body of work.

Bjerke’s ENSO installation applies the Japanese name for circles of enlightenment to photographs of the circles she routinely draws with medical supplies as part of her on-going healthcare. In this presentation, a grid of one hundred and twenty gelatin silver prints provides the focus for an intimate meditation space. "
