Weather or Not: Boise Art Museum

dnj Gallery artist:  Robert von Sternberg is included in this exhibition, inspired by BAM’s Second Nature Art Cards, presents a selection of artworks from the Museum’s Permanent Collection in which artists reflect on the relationships between humans and nature. Whether ecological change is part of a natural cycle or induced by a range of possible man-made causes, many artists are turning their attention to environmental themes.

EXPOSURE 2015

EXPOSURE 2015 which will take place on Saturday, July 25th, here at dnj Gallery. EXPOSURE will include a full day of Portfolio Reviews followed by the LACP Member's Exhibition. Portfolio reviews offer photographers an excellent opportunity to show their work directly to museum curators, gallery owners, publishers, collectors and other photo professionals.

The portfolio Reviews will take place 9 am-5 pm. EXPOSURE will culminate with the LACP Members Exhibition Opening that night from 6-8 pm, here at dnj Gallery.

Upcoming Exhibition: First Annual LACP Student Street Shooting in Los Angeles

The dnj Gallery and the Los Angeles Center of Photography are proud to announce "Street Shooting in Los Angeles." This exhibit is comprised of 28 photographs taken by 28 photographers under the guidance of street shooting instructor Julia Dean over a six-month period. Street photography is a type of documentary photography that captures candid moments on the street. This genre of photography follows the ethics of photojournalism and documentary photography by not setting up or manipulating the image.  As Julia Dean explains, "Street photography can be a bit scary and exhilarating at the same time. But one thing is for certain, it will make you a better photographer."

"A Sense of Community" featured in the Los Angeles Times

dnj Gallery's exhibit "A Sense of Community" was recently featured in the Los Angeles Times. 

Students From Harvard-Westlake have collaborated with students from the Humanitas Academy of Art and Technology (HAAT), a Public high school in East L.A., for "A Sense of Community", an exploration of place through documentary photography.

This collaboration is directed by Joe Medina, photography teacher at Harvard-Westlake, and Joan Dooley, Photography teacher at HAAT.

The exhibit is now open here at dnj Gallery through June 20th.

Nicole Maloney TEDxVeniceBeach

dnj Gallery is pleased to present our good friend Nicole Maloney talking about her latest photography installation OOMO at local TEDx event Venice Beach.

Nicole Maloney believes that our prejudices and our judgements encompass five aspects of humanity - Race, Religion, Gender, Socioeconomic Status and Sexual Orientation. Her unique approach to digital artistic installations are designed to seek out cultural understanding and peace.

Place a camera in Nicole’s hands and she will capture the truth hidden in the human soul and in the earth’s landscape. Nicole graduated with a BA in Communication Studies from UCLA in 1989 and later studied fashion at Parsons School of Design in Paris, France. After 7 years at Sony Studios, Nicole created Simul-Sports, Inc., an interactive start-up funded by Sun Microsystems. Nicole went on to create, design and produce her photographic work in her first publication entitled RARE (Daab Books, 2008) followed by two children’s books: Romeo Loves Juliet and Much Ado (2011). Nicole’s most recent installations are the OOMO Cube (oomola.com) in downtown Los Angeles and her Hello Kitty: All Stacked Up sculpture (Exploring the Super Cute World of Hello Kitty worldwide traveling exhibition 2014-2018). Nicole’s OOMO Cube was awarded LA Weekly’s Best Public Art 2014 and the President’s Award from the Japanese-American National Museum.

Photography students have joined forces to tell an important story about the tale of their two diametrically divergent communities. Students from the private prep school, Harvard-Westlake, are collaborating with students from the Humanitas Academy of Art and Technology (HAAT), a public high school in East LA, to make a 21st century, vibrant documentary portrait of where "we" live - covering a wide range of territory from wealthy suburbs to urban blue-collar and under-privileged neighborhoods.

Gallery hours Tuesday - Saturday 11am - 6pm.

A Collaborative Book and Gallery Exhibit Between Suburban Prep and Urban Public High Schools

The project will culminate in a gallery exhibit and the publication of a hardcover book. This collaboration is being directed by Joe Medina, photography teacher at Harvard Westlake and Joan Dooley, photography teacher at the Humanitas Academy of Art and Technology (HAAT).

The exhibit will open at the DNJ Gallery at Bergamot Station (Santa Monica) on Saturday, May 16, 2015 and remain on view for a month.

The project is inspired by a belief in the power of photography as an educational tool, and a desire to help people communicate the way they see their lives and their communities. The project also aims at encouraging students to respond to artistic challenges that will push their creative and technical boundaries.
